Over the last couple of months
I've been fortunate enough to travel once again; one of my greatest pleasures in life. I enjoyed great food and the
company of family in Scotland.
In Morocco, I awoke each day to new sounds and saw first-hand this vibrant, fabulous
culture. I was treated wonderfully everywhere we went; from the scorching
marketplace to the cool interior of our elegant residence.

The
spice markets, carpets, tiles and designs inlaid into mosque walls and
doorways offered a visual feast that I never tired of, nor will I ever
forget. These experiences and the people I met
can't help but inspire and influence my future art. It was
wonderful.
Back
home in the studio now, I am finishing pieces and painting up a storm.
Here are some of the events I'm involved with right now. Thank you, as
always, for your enthusiastic support.
Ml,
Julie

"Opalescent"
30" x 20", Oil with silver block print on canvas.
Available from
Addison Art Gallery
This new work is another in my series of incorporating metallic paint with traditional oil paints. I created a printing block that reflected the pattern on the kimono. This block was used to hand print silver oil paint onto the background. The silver irridiscence constantly changes depending on where you view the painting.

still long enough to model. These three

As soon as Clyde and Horace begin to
crow, they'll be looking for new homes.
Any takers?

 Spring
is lovely this year with beautiful warm days. So what do a group of
artists think up to amuse themselves? We visited the lake. A painter, a
couture designer, a photographer, two wedding dresses, a couple of
willing models and some paint made the perfect mix for the "Spring
Transformation".
Creating
new trends are what artists do best. "Transform the Dress" is an option
for the bride and her wedding dress after the honeymoon is over.
Instead of storing the dress under the bed, the newlywed can create a
memorable and arty photoshoot in a unconventional setting.
We've seen shots in car washes, by the lake, and in the bayou. We got some great images at the lake and lots of giggles!
Couture
dress designer, Debbie La Franchi supplied the gowns. You can see more
of them here. Stefanie Snyder shot some beautiful photography which you
can view here.
This year got off to a great start with several shows happening at once. Thanks for all your support and encouragement.
Best,
Julie

I love to paint dancers!
Dance
has always inspired me. It is the embodiment of grace and aesthetics. Dancers aim for perfection. The are elegant, disciplined and physically strong. So, they also make
fantastic artists' models. When my daughters danced at California Dance Arts I was introduced to a new set of young adults who I hired to pose for my paintings.
The California Theatrical Youth Ballet and California Dance Arts celebrated
the 10th season of the Snow Queen this holiday season. As several of
the principal dancers have posed for my paintings I thought I'd
showcase them in this newsletter. The paintings below feature these
dancers.
The Verdugo Monthly Magazine, December issue, reported "This year marks the tenth anniversary of The Snow
Queen - Ballet Redefined, an updated rendition of the classic with an
original score by Randall Michael Tobin. "Ballet redefined" refers to
the variety of dance and musical styles, which drift outside the usual
realm of ballet. "It's a little Cirque du Soleil-esque," says Holt. [Erin holt is the artistic director and choreographer of The Snow Queen]. "We're redefining
that whole viewpoint that ballet has to be stiff and narrow. It's full,
you can expand it, push the boundaries."

Hi,

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
I wish this to all my friends, family and those who encourage my creative efforts. My success is in part, helped by you. Thank you.
Many people ask about the subjects I paint. Just about 95% of all my work is done in the studio with a live model. The model in this painting had just returned from Brazil. She bought this dress while on her travels. It is a genuine carnival costume, beautifully beaded all by hand. Her matching headdress came from there too. Beaded in red and gold with real ostrich plumes. The trick was to keep it from toppling over.
The model is painted here resting in the cool shade, out of the hustle and bustle of the street just before the carnival gets underway.
I truly loved painting her.
